Flora Beynon Netball tournament

Ms K. Gallon - Sports Coordinator —

Westland High recently competed in the West Coast Flora Beynon Netball tournament, with school's from all over the Coast.

On the 3rd of August the Westland High School senior A netball team competed in the West Coast senior netball tournament for the Flora Beynon trophy. Schools across the Coast stretching as far as South Westland to Karamea travelled to Greymouth to compete.

Westland High looked to build on team combinations in their first game against Greymouth High, who led the scoreboard till halftime. Our team had an awesome third quarter putting pressure over the ball and converting goals from intercepts. Westland won 30-16 which put them in a good position within their pool.

Westland High settled into their second game early against Karamea Area School, showing team cohesion and good full court defense. This meant that by halftime, some of our more experienced seniors could rest and all team players made the court. Westland won 36-10 which advanced us straight into the final against pool B winners, Buller High.

With a steady start to the finals game, our girls did not give up. Westland's defense was impressive and brought the ball through the mid court strongly after intercepts. The composure shown from our team made it hard for Buller to continue building on their momentum. Westland came back firing in the last quarter. Feeding great ball into our attacks to convert points and demonstrated awesome full court defensive pressure. In a nail biting finish, Buller came away with the win 23-21. Well done to the Westland High A netball, it was a great tournament to build on confidence and player combinations before SISS.
