Update from Kai Whakapai

Kai Whakapai - Kate and Pascale —

Read on to hear more about how Kai Whakapai (our fantastic school canteen) is doing.

We are into our 3rd term now and have really enjoyed settling in and making some good healthy food options for our students and staff.

We will soon be sending out a survey to students, staff and parents to gauge how we are going and see if there are any new ideas. Please if you would be so kind as to take the 2 minutes to leave us your thoughts/ideas.

Our main goals are to:

-provide affordable food options, on the healthier side of the line. Yes we have some sweet stuff, muffins every day but we save the cinnamon scrolls for a treat on Fridays!

-help look after our planet by using bamboo boats, wooden cutlery, paperbags and only serve (smaller/low sugar) drinks in aluminium cans (the best material for recycling).

-back up what the school educates our students in; healthy eating to look after ourselves and looking after the environment.

If we know a student has already bought a drink in one day, we wont sell them another, we send them to the water fountain. This naturally impacts on our sales but we are here to look after the health of your tamariki, not make profits. We hope that you will also talk to your children about the harm sugar has on their bodies especially the energy drinks available and large bottles of fizz and advise them against buying. Not to mention the plastic bottles they can come in!

We will continue with the current menu and our ‘kai bowl’ (our weekly special), and introduce some salad options as the warm weather approaches.

You are very welcome to prepay for your students lunches, you can pay in bulk via cash, eftpos or direct credit, just contact by email below to organise. We can keep a tab running (and make sure it is not spent on drinks if you so wish) and contact you when it’s getting low.

Thanks for all your support, feel free to email if you have any queries.
