How does learning online work at Westland High?

Westland High School —

Online learning presents a new set of learning challenges to over come, but many opportunities to learn new skill sets as well.

Online learning has started for Westland High School and will remain in place until the Government advises otherwise. We don't know how long this will last, but as soon as we receive notification of a change to those circumstances we will let all parents and students know.

1. Emails

Parents/Whanau please take the time to check your emails regularly and ask your child to do the same. Teachers send out important information by email to students daily with instructions related to learning and importantly, invites to online learning sessions.

2. Contacting teachers

Students have email addresses for their teachers and can send emails at any time. Parents may also send emails to the teacher if required. Please DO NOT use the office email to connect with teachers this will result in significant delays.

3. Monitoring your child’s learning

Each teacher will be monitoring the progress and achievement of each student in their class. Students will need to complete a quick Google form each time they log onto an online class, this will be used to complete the class roll. If your child is ill please email the school office so they can mark that on the roll, otherwise they will be marked as truant if they are not in the class. Where students have not engaged in the learning parents will be contacted by one of the Academic and Pastoral leaders.

4. Contacting Academic and Pastoral leaders

Monica Hulme - Junior School, Sarah Bateup - Middle School and Adrienne Reeves - Senior Academic Leader are each available for any learning-related queries. They will also be making contact where there are online class attendance concerns.

4. Checkout Learning sites

Teachers have and are continuing to work on updating Learning Sites and Work spaces for learning from home. These sites are the learning hub for all students, and parents/whanau are welcome to visit them. These can be found through the school website.

5. Timetable

Students will have online classes at the same time as their usual school timetable. The teacher of each class will send students an invite link, via email, to a Google Meet (online video class) which all students in that class should attend. The teacher will work with students during the online lesson and where required set work for students for other times during the week, this will be acombination of online and students working independently by themselves. The learning sites are a key point of contact. Students may email their teacher at any time.

On Fridays, online school will run period two (10.00 am start) and period three only. Friday online school finishes for the week at the end of period three, although students should continue to work on set tasks as provided, during the week, so they keep up with the work set for the following week. Teachers will monitor students progress through work provided and through the learning sites.
