Senior Basketball team compete in South Island Senior Secondary School Tournament

Ms Packham - Teacher and Basketball coach. —

The Senior Basketball team competed in Greymouth for the South Island Senior Secondary School tournament recently.

This year SISS Basketball was held in Greymouth making transport, accommodation and fundraising super easy. The first game of the tournament we are matched up with a school called “St Kevins” who are last year's national finalists and all about 6ft tall. So yeah, we lost by about 50.

The next day we had an early start - Buller at 8am. This was a great game and we won confidently by 40 points. Our next game was at 4.45 against Hornby. What a game! It was goal for goal with both teams fighting for a place in the top 4… which would finalize their place in nationals. We unfortunately lost by 3 points so were now playing off for the 5th - 8th spots.

Tight, pushy defense rattled us in our next game and we struggled to pull back the lead Kavanagh had. Our final game was now against Central Southland. Fighting for 7th place. Again a tight game, goal for goal - we ended up losing by 3 points.

The boys represented WHS amazingly. Great attitude and sportsmanship was displayed and it was awesome to watch them all play with such passion.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank their coach Tahlia Hammond and assistant coach Toni Rasmussen. They have worked wonders with the boys this year.
