Help for students suffering from stress

Westland High School —

The impact of COVID-19 and lockdown is causing stress within young people in New Zealand. It is likely that young people will continue to experience the consequences of months of disruption to regular routines, family functioning and social relationships.

Due to the speed and severity of the impact of COVID-19, many young people will be experiencing increased levels of anxiety, followed by boredom, frustration and the challenges of online education and reduced interaction with wider whānau/ family and peers. Many, especially those with pre-existing health issues, will also have to manage reality-based and media-amplified concerns about their health. If you know any young people who may be struggling, SPARX may be of help.

SPARX, is a fantasy-based computer game/tool using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for treating teenage anxiety and depression, was developed by researchers at the University of Auckland and proven to be effective in a Randomised Controlled Trial.

It is funded by the Ministry of Health. Some of our students are familiar with the use of this game already and found it helpful. Students can also talk with the school Counsellor, Ms Lauder, by email fionalauder@westlandhigh.school.nz Parents are also able to contact Ms Lauder if they have concerns regarding their young people.
