West-A-Maths

Mr Kelderman - Mathematics teacher. —

The Westland High School teams competed well at the West-A-Maths competition held in Westport. Congratulations to all students who competed.

West-a-Maths is a Maths competition where teams of four compete to answer 20 problems in 30 minutes. This year it was very ably hosted by Westport South School in the NBS Theatre.

The teams from Westland High were picked from the Maths extension class based on their scores for the Otago Problem Solving competition. It was just a method of deciding who should go out of a group of good maths students as there was not room for all of them.

The teams that ended up competing wereYear 7 Sam Nicholls, Stevie Pearson, Phellyz Reyes, and Tamsin Gillespie.Year 8 Yilin Lyu, Alanna Nicholls, Olivia Carter and Alice Powell.

The year 7's did well and ended in a four way tie for 3rd place .This led to an extra question and they were pipped by two teams leaving them in 5th place of 14 teams.

The year 8's answered all the 20 questions but finished a few minutes after a Grey Main team so they came second.

A really great effort from the students especially considering they didn’t have as much practice as usual (though this was probably true of most of the schools).

A really big thank you to Janice Harrison for driving the teams to Westport and looking afterthem there.
