Careers events coming soon

Mrs Weepu (Whaea C) - Careers advisor —

There are a number of events coming up for students to help them narrow down a chosen pathway for their future.

Ara Institute will be here at Westland High School on Thursday 11 March. They will be giving 6 x 20 minute presentations on the following to senior students


The Female Only Defence Careers Experience (DCE) will be held at Burnham Military Camp over 28th – 30th April. This is a three day event designed to show you what it’s like to be in the NZ Army. It’s for people from all walks of life, and that anyone with a bit of fitness, aptitude, and motivation can do. Registrations are now open for this event.

The DCE is great for gaining an insight to what the Army has to offer as a potential career option, with leadership and resilience skills development, and the chance to mix and mingle with likeminded people.

Hui Tairanga | Regional info evenings

Nine regional UC information evenings will be held in May and June. These evenings are a great opportunity for future students and their whānau to learn more about the range of qualifications UC offers, to hear from our leading academics and get key questions answered. There will also be two virtual events in June for people who can’t attend a face-to-face event.

The government Careers site, careers.govt.nz allows students to browse, research and store jobs or further study options. Students from Years 9 to 13 are able to set personal, educational and career goals as well. In the Career Central option students can create a CV, explore opportunities, events and resources relating to numerous career pathways.

Connected - Employment, Education and Training

This new service is an info line providing information on Employment, Education and Training. Linking & referring on to Tertiary & various Government departments. It has a drop in Hubs (WINZ) and various other services. As well a Careers Advisory (TEC driven). Visit Connected for more information.

University of Canterbury

UC Liaison Officer, Blake Hoare, will be at our school on the 16th of March to give a  presentation for Year 13’s. The topics for this presentation will be tailored specifically to our students needs, however the prepared presentation includes:

  • An introduction to UC, including how we shape our graduates to change the world.
  • A first look at the Bachelor’s degrees available at UC.
  • The UC lifestyle
  • Information regarding tuition fees, funding, and scholarships
  • A look through accommodation options and an outline of the application processes
  • Important dates, upcoming UC events, and how to get more information.
