West Coast Secondary School Badminton

Westland High School —

Westland High School was triumphant in the Annual West Coast Secondary Schools tournament held at Westland High School recently.

Players from Karamea Area School, Buller High School, Greymouth High School and South Westland Area School attended with both boys and girls teams. Teams played doubles and singles in two pools with some very close ties and countbacks on points. Then pools played off for placings. Karamea playing in their first ever badminton school tournament did not disappoint having close ties and a win and a loss for both boys and girls in pool play. In finals placings South Westland boys had an even matches against Karamea resulting in a three all draw with last year’s winners South Westland taking out 3rd placing by 109 points to 101. Westland High boys played off against Greymouth High School for the trophy defeating them 4 games to 2. And the Westland High School girls had a narrow win in the final against the strong South Westland Area School team with a three all draw but on a countback of points Westland took it out 110 points to 102. Badminton was all round winner on the day and all students played with enjoyment with obvious skills improved throughout the tournament. Westland High School managed to get second teams together after John Paull II had to withdraw. Both Buller High and Greymouth High students played well and all players did their schools proud. Final placings are as follows: BOYS - 1st Westland High School A, 2nd Greymouth High School, 3rd South Westland Area School, 4th Karamea, 5th Westland High School B, 6th Buller. GIRLS – 1st Westland High School A, 2nd South Westland Area School, 3rd Karamea, 4th Westland High School B, 5th Greymouth High School, 6th Buller.

Westland High School would like to take this opportunity to thank West Coast Badminton for organising the tournament, supporting our school and nurturing our badminton players. We really appreciate your support.
