Sports Newsletter - Term Four
Our Summer Sports teams have been having fun in the sun (and sometimes rain). We've also had tamariki compete in Interschool competitions as well as the Auckland Marathon event.
What has been happening?
Touch Rugby
Westmere Supernovas
The Year 3 Westmere Supernovas have started the season with superb attitude and spirit, with a few players having never played before they have showed commitment, passion and an amazing attitude. Well done Westmere Supernovas. An exciting season lies ahead. Super proud of them.
Westmere Rockettes
Sophia and Nicole got POD for some awesome tagging and nice big chases!
Westmere Wolves
The Wolves touch team made up of Year 6 boys have started Term 4 2025 with a big bang! They have won two games and drawn two - no losses so far! Despite the referee not catching all the ‘touches’ or player fouls, the boys in the team have shown good sportsmanship; humble in the draws and gracious when winning. Thanks to Vic for the coaching and Kelly for managing the team.
Westmere Warriors
The Westmere Warriors (Yr 4) boys have been off to a fabulous start with five strong games and over 35 tries scored so far. Having mostly played together for a few terms now the boys have been working on their passing, quick plays and fast defence. One of their tries even made Touch Rugby’s tries of the week (watch Freddie and Oscar D in action here - https://www.instagram.com/p/DQdceowEoVH/?img_index=1&igsh=MWthaTljNTE5cnNhZg==
Basketball
Westmere Kahu
The Westmere Kahu (girl yr 6) basketball team have had four tough games! Three very close losses and one win which they secured in the last few seconds. The girls work incredibly well as a team, with lots of great passing and a few games each of the eight of them scoring (even getting free throws in). Three more weeks together - let’s make them good ones. And a special thanks to Dylan O’Connor’s Family for donating the girls fabulous bball singlets - they look so good!
Westmere Tangaroa
It has been another enjoyable and competitive term of basketball for Westmere Tangaroa. The team have continued to work together, building on their basic skills and most importantly, have enjoyed training and matches, win or lose. The team have welcomed a new player to the sport, welcomed back past players and supported injured team mates. Ngā mihi koutou to the mātua who turn out to support the tamariki and get them to training and games. Again, a special ngā mihi to our coach Steve Lee. As the season comes to an end, all the support and aroha goes to our tamariki heading off to year 7 adventures next year, ngā mihi for being an awesome group of tamariki.
Westmere Waves
Interschool Basketball
On 16 October, four senior teams of basketballers headed to the Trusts Arena to compete at the Interschool Basketball tournament against other central city schools. The tamariki represented Westmere really well and each team had a lot of fun!
Summer Netball
There are two year 6 teams playing at the Windmill Park competition. We have had some terribly wet games as well as some super hot games - typical spring netball. With just two games left to play, both the Shooting Stars and the Starlights are undefeated.
The Shooting Stars work incredibly well together and continue to impress their spectators with their increasing skills and teamwork. Thanks to Tracy Mika for tie-dying their uniforms!
Minipolo
We have two minipolo teams playing this term. The Marlins made the step up from flippa ball, where they can touch the ground, to mini water polo, where they have to swim up and down the pool and egg beat the whole time in the deep water. A real test in fitness & stamina! Every player has embraced the challenge and made Westmere proud by playing as a team, never giving up and making the most of opportunities.
The Sharks have been having some challenging games but are improving every week against extremely strong competition. They all love the game and put in 100% each week.
Auckland Marathon
On a sunny morning at the beginning of the month, Westmere had a good little squad of runners doing various distances at the Auckland Marathon. Many of the kids run regularly with our School run club on Wednesday mornings and the training paid off! We had some very impressive finishes:
5km
Seb Lyon 23m:14s - 4th place in category
William Lawson 23m:25s - 5th place in category
Freddie Laban 25m:39s - 14th place in category
Margot Woods 27m:06s - 22nd place in category (and a PB)
We also had our two youngest run clubbers - Charlotte Laban and Harlow Keen run this distance - they are in year 2 so it was an awesome achievement (and they did it pretty quickly in around 30mins).
What opportunities are coming up?
Support Auckland FC and Westmere School
Do you want to go to the Auckland FC home match on Sunday?
Vs Newcastle Jets | November 30th
Auckland FC has given us access to Spinzo, a 'group ticketing' platform that makes it super easy for friends and family to buy individual tickets to Auckland FC matches and sit together, rather than one person having to pay for all the tickets upfront. You can tell you who from your school is going to the match and where they are sitting!
If you purchase tickets through Spinzo, Auckland FC will donate $5 to Westmere School for every ticket sold.
Purchase your tickets here!
Weet-bix Tryathlon 2026
The Weet-bix Tryathlon will be held at Pt England Reserve on Sunday 2 March 2026. It is a very well run and super fun event for the kids to give a go. It is all about trying something new (or just having fun if it's not their first time).
Distances are approximate and are as follows:
6 year olds 50m swim / 1.5km run
7 year olds 50m swim / 4km cycle / 1.5km run
8 – 10 year olds 75 – 100m swim / 4km cycle / 1.5km run
11 – 15 year olds 150 – 200m swim / 8km cycle / 1.5 km run
You can sign up to be part of the school team here - http://raceroster.com/events/2026/109746/east-auckland-weet-bix-kids-tryathlon/register?team=859357
We are also looking for someone to be the parent lead for this event - the bonus is that you'll get a parking pass for a super-close carpark! You would just need to transport the School tent to and from the event and put it up as a base for the day. If you would be happy to do this, please email sport@westmere.school.nz.
Term One Sport 2026
If you have any queries about your child playing sport for Westmere in term one next year, please get in touch with Jaci - sport@westmere.school.nz.
This is the last newsletter I will be writing as Lexa is in her last year at Westmere. I have loved being involved with sport at Westmere, watching the kids develop new skills, teamwork and resilience is so cool! It has been great getting to see what all the kids get up to. What started as a weekly newsletter back in April 2022 as a way to inform our community about the sport being offered and run by the School and to celebrate the kids' achievements in a post-covid world has now become more of a once-or-so a term summary but I hope that you've all enjoyed seeing what the kids get up to on the sports fields and pools.
