Sports Newsletter - Week Four, Term One
Our touch and basketball teams have enjoyed their games this week - read their reports below!
Touch
Week 3 at Cox's Bay touch was a pearler!
The Yr 1/2 Warriors had another gutsy game, winning 5-2. The team have really got the hang of side stepping and making quick decisions to pass from dummy half. Freddie Laban, Oscar Dick and James Barton made some fabulous tries. Captain of the day, Bear Smith, said "I like the game because we scored many tries and we tried our hardest and played our best".
Our Yr 4 Wolves had a tough game against the Pt Chev Pirates. There was some amazing defence, with a never give up attitude to get that touch. Congratulations to Hugo Jarvis who scored a fabulous try nipping down the sideline. Captain of the day, William Walker, said “It was really hard but was still fun. The other team was always where they needed to be. Luckily, Hugo was back from his holiday and was able to score a try.
Tangaroa Touch (Yr 3/4) - He tino pai nga tamariki i whutupaora. Kua oma tere a Ava, ratou ko Theo, ko Arawa. He tino whakamarumaru nga roopu. Kia kaha a tera wiki.
(The children played a great game of touch. Ava, Theo and Arawa ran fast and the whole team played great defence.)
The Westmere Raiders (Yr 5/6) played a close game against The Scorpions on Tuesday this week! Despite the opposition being taller and a fair bit older than us it was a close game with some lightning fast touches from Sean, Cooper Ob, and Cooper D and some amazing passes from Leo, and Fede. We were lucky enough to have the speedy Scarlet and dummy half master Archie D filling in for us as subs while Frankie was away. Congratulations to our player of the day Emilia this week for her great listening and fast pace getting the ball up the field! We could not be prouder of the team’s progress and their positive attitudes over the last few weeks!
Run Club
We had a small group of runners join us on Wednesday for run club on a beautiful sunny morning. Its a great way to start the day for children and adults too! Thanks to Sarah-Jane (Scarlett and Will’s Mum) for taking it this week. Any questions, please contact Lucy - lucyafarrugia@gmail.com.
Basketball
Louis Plamus from the Hops (photo at the top of this newsletter) reports:
Our team had a really good game on Friday, we’re all playing well together and having heaps of fun!
Hustle POTD Max Simeon:
It was close in the first half, Pt Chev played well and our defence wasn’t good enough. We played better in the second half, especially on defence, and ended up getting a good win.
Westmere Kahu had a fun game against the Ponsonby Hornets last Monday with a noticeable improvement in their speed and passing. Well done girls!
Ski Team
If your child is a proficient skier in years 4-6 you may want to give them the opportunity to trial for the ski team. The ski competition has been held annually at Mount Ruapehu but has been one of the many events impacted by COVID in the last two years. This year there is no certainty as yet about the competition while the ski fields remain in administration, but everything is being done to try and secure the future of the competition.
Children who would like to trial for the event train at Snowplanet on Friday mornings. It is the responsibility of parents to organise transport and supervision at the venue.
We will share more information on the competition as soon as we have it, but please be aware that all children need to be accompanied by a family member at the mountain when competing.
Please complete the form attached if you would like your child to be considered for the team
