Road Safety Education
Important updates from our Travel Wise Team, Constable Taina and the Stepping Out Programme and a survey request from Auckland Transport...
Travel Wise
The Travelwise Primary School Programme focuses on road safety education and fun ways to get to school. Teaching children to be safe and encouraging them to get out of the car and be active inspires good habits for the future.
Due to the efforts of the Travelwise Team in 2015, the school was awarded a Silver Travelwise Award. The criteria includes training students for Road Patrol, the community participating in Travelwise activities e.g. walk to school promotions like our waka waewae and students leading Travelwise in the school.
Our Travelwise team were presented with the award and individual certificates at the school assembly on Friday.
Stepping Out
Stepping Out is a school road safety programme run by Constable Taina for our junior students. The purpose of the programme is to teach our students how to cross the road safely. Over the next two weeks our junior students will be participating. Some of the key messages learnt from Constable Taina were:
- You must always walk across the road and look right first.
- If you are under 8 years old then you need adult supervision when crossing the road (children have not developed road safety awareness yet e.g. an understanding of how fast cars travel).
- Teach your Mum or Dad how to cross the road. Constable Teina said 'we could be the boss' but with our parents supervision!
Learning Studio 1 - Crossing the road with Constable Taina
Robyn's home group report what they learnt from Constable Taina:
We talked about different ways we came to school and made a big tick chart. We discovered that 7 children came to school in a car and that 10 children walked. Constable Taina was very pleased with us because more children walked than came in a car. We learnt to say traffic instead of just cars. Traffic means anything moving along the road. We need to watch out for all traffic when we cross the road. Constable Taina taught us lots of words, like footpath, road and kerb, we had to find them all in a picture. We could all tell Constable Taina what they are for. We learnt that you had to stand back from the kerb to keep safe from cars and always remember to look straight ahead. Finally we went outside and practised crossing an imaginary road. We practised all the things we were talking about.

Parent Survey
Auckland Transport conduct regular surveys to understand how important messages are being communicated within the Auckland community. They are currently seeking feedback from our school community on the ‘Back to School’ campaign which has been run throughout the Auckland region.
Please complete this brief online survey. All information and responses are used for internal research purposes only. Thank you for taking the time to assist with the survey and for supporting our Travelwise programme.
