Sports Newsletter - Week 9, Term 1
What a wonderful term of sport! Friendships made, new skills mastered and lots of fun had by so many tamariki. Thank you to all the coaches, managers, organisers, teachers and parents for all that you do and the time that you give to our children’s sporting experiences.
Last chance to sign up for Term Two sports! See previous newsletters or below for details or contact sport@westmere.school.nz.
Ski Team
Last call to join the 2023 Westmere Ski Team! Race Training is held at Snowplanet on Friday mornings of Term 2 and Term 3, for the opportunity to compete at the North Island Primary Schools Champs at Mount Ruapehu in September.
Whilst there is no certainty yet that the event will happen this year as the ski field remains in administration, the Friday trainings are a great opportunity for your kids to hone their race skills, and there will be other race events held at Snowplanet even if NIPS is cancelled again.
Please complete the following form if you would like your child to be considered for the team, or contact kate.baguley@gmail.com if you'd like further information before signing up.
Basketball
What a fantastic term of Basketball! It’s been incredible to watch every kid progress over the term, the teamwork and skills have improved significantly with each passing week. Big thanks to our coaches for their tireless efforts and everything that they put into it.
Westmere Hops
Krish - Player of the day reports:
The game was close at first, with the other team playing really well. Then we increased our defense, and started getting more shots in the net! Everyone played really well and tried their hardest!
Team Kahu
Team Kahu played super awesome against the Pt Chev Hotshots last Monday and even though they had a 21-6 loss that score really didn’t reflect the game (those boys got some very lucky 3 pointers!).
Fabulous passing, catching and dribbling, and the defending has really improved - those lunchtime sessions must be going well!
Gorillaz
The Gorillaz had a great game this week! With a couple of team members away, it was up to the fab 5 (Sam, Emery, Charlie, Temai and Kruz) to play a full game each against the Pt Chev Panthers.
Our hard work at practices paid off, with some great passing, defense and shooting.
The team came away with their first win of the season, final score 12-10 which was an amazing confidence booster for all. Sam Greer said, “it was really cool to have our first win - we all played really well!”
Touch
We accidentally missed the Tigers update from Week 6, so here goes. That Tuesday was pretty wet - so the field was pretty slippery, which made playing touch a bit tricky, but the Tigers still had loads of fun. Archie Dixon was the Tiger’s player of the day - due to amazing stepping and running in the week.
Week 7 of touch had perfect conditions for the final games of the term - sunshine, dry green fields and lots of enthusiasm.
The Knights had a tough final game for the season. They played extremely well and displayed all the great skills they had learnt through the season. They finished second in the competition- well done! Big thanks to Harry for standing in for Alby at the last minute.
The Raiders were still adjusting to playing on the whole field (it’s a big step-up) and had a tough game. There were two players of the day this week - Cooper for running hard and always supporting others and Leo for great listening and superb running effort.
The Wolves had another hard game, this week against the St Francis Golden Flames. However, they showed huge improvement - doing some getting settles straight up the field (Narla-Mae Tuiletufuga, Scarlett Lawson and Sophie Lamings as dummy half extraordinaire), some never give up defence (Temai Joesph and William Paddy) and getting two tries in the corners to Emery Mahood and Charlie Swanston (oh the spacing out!!!).
The Tigers and the Warriors had another epic battle for first and second place in their competition, with the Tigers coming away with a 4-3 victory. Well done to Leon Tait for player of the day (for excellent running and defending), and Charlie Dick, Gigi Ormerod, Lennox Pile, Freddie Laban and Oscar Dick on scoring tries. But it really was a team effort each time in getting over the line, with some great teamwork and quick plays. Warriors captain of the day, Oscar said “It was a very good game against the Tigers. They played really well and won”.
Team Tangaroa have not played the last two weeks due to the bad weather and also the Noho marae trip.
Thanks again to our fabulous parent coaches and managers - Glen Dixon, Steve Watene, Melissa Bodenham, Julia Jones, Melinda Dixon and Sarah-Jane Lawson. You all did a fabulous job of organising, supporting and encouraging our Westmere teams and our tamariki thank you!
We look forward to everyone playing again in Term 4 (and hopefully some new touch friends too)!
