Year 5/6 Update
Keep up to date with all the action in the Senior School!
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.
It is hard to believe that there is only one term left until our Year 6s head off to their respective intermediate schools. Please make sure that intermediate/college enrolment forms are in for your child. Last week we were fortunate to have a city planner from Boffa Miskell speak to us about her job. This enabled the students to make a strong real-world connection to our Concept learning.
We will be busy up until the last day of term with our Celebration of Learning on Tuesday evening and, on Thursday, we will be walking down to Pasadena Intermediate for their Cultural Festival celebration.
Good luck to our two teams who are taking part in the EPro8 Science and Technology Challenge at Kowhai Intermediate tomorrow!
Please keep an eye out early next term for information regarding our Year 6 End of Year Events.
Celebration of Learning
Come along this Tuesday 26th September for our Celebration of Learning. Our team has been exploring the conceptual understanding of 'Through exploration and innovation, we can create a better future' under our school theme of 'We imagine, We innovate, We explore'.
The children are very excited about sharing their learning from this term. Please come along any time between 6:00pm-7:30pm with your child, when a variety of exhibits and showcases will be on display in our studios.
Puberty Consultation Evening
Next term we will be delivering a ‘Positive Puberty’ programme to all Year 5 and 6s. We encourage parents/caregivers to be actively involved by communicating with their child about these changes, so we would like to invite you to our information evening on Wednesday 18th October 7:00pm-7:45pm.
This information evening will help you to:
- Understand the content that will be taught during this Positive Puberty unit
- Be aware of the resources available to you as a parent
- Be aware of lesson overviews that may be covered in your child’s studio
- Ask any questions related to the programme.
At this evening you will receive a consent form which will give permission for your child to take part in this programme. If there is any reason that you can not attend, you will still receive a form from your child’s home group teacher.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Sports Update
The winter sport season is winding down but there is still plenty of action happening. This week our successful rugby team headed to the Champion of Champions tournament to compete with the top primary schools from around Auckland. Also this week we had three Year 6 teams playing an Interschool Netball tournament at North Harbour.
Events to look out for early next term include the our netball prizegiving ceremony, the ASB Kids Marathon, Galaxy Touch at Cox’s Bay and the senior school athletics day at Walker Park, Pt Chevalier.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori was celebrated last week; a week where we celebrated one of the official languages of New Zealand. Kia ora te reo Māori was the theme for this year’s Māori Language Week.
Well done to everybody who made an effort to inject more of the language into their daily life! We are very fortunate to have Whaea Jane in our studios one afternoon a week to support our integration of Te Reo, and also the amazing culture within our school that serves to immerse and enrich us in our exposure to the language. The kids have been working very hard in developing their fluency and have been taking full advantage of all of the great resources we have access to here at Westmere|Te Rehu. We encourage you to try to use Te Reo at home in your daily lives. Through increased exposure, we can begin to gain a greater understanding of the language and culture that forms such an important part of our identity as New Zealanders.
Ngā mihi,
Jason, Marcela, Mike, Sarah, Sophie and Terry
