Sports Newsletter - Week 4, Term 2

Westmere Sport —

A very busy week for Westmere Sport this week! Read on to find out what some of our tamariki have been up to.

Cross Country - Year 1-4

The junior and middle schools were finally able to put their running practice into action running their cross country around School on Wednesday.  The sun shone and we had lots of supporters there to cheer everyone on.  The senior school helpers did a magnificent job of warming the kids up and marshalling the course.

Well done to everyone for giving it their best.  There were some super speedy runners out there!

Cross Country Inter School Competition

On Thursday our top cross country runners in years 5 and 6 competed against other central zone schools at Grey Lynn Park. The Inter-School Cross Country was an exciting morning for our Senior School Students. The kids showed so much grit and determination and it’s always a wonderful atmosphere when the wider community comes together to cheer on their teams.

Congratulations to all the students for giving it their all and to Alby Richards who placed 1st in the 10/11 year old boys division, Sophie Clark 2nd in the 9 year old girls and also to the 9 year old girls who placed 3rd overall in their division.

Flippaball

Our flippaball teams have had some good games over the last few weeks. The Dolphins had a tough game against Saint Kents Boys which ended in a draw 2-2.  It was very exciting to watch! The team was great on defence and attack. Well done to Margot Woods for player of the day.

The Sharks played two games on Sunday, the first against the Balmoral Stingrays which they won 9-1 and second against the Dio Starfish 11-0.  They were dominant in both games (as indicated by the scorelines). Their passing was exceptional and everyone had shots at goal - their skills are coming together so well now and their teamwork is awesome! Well done to Mia Erueti-Charters for player of the day.

Basketball

Last Friday Westmere Taniwha played hard in a very close and exciting game against Newton Rogue. Although the Taniwha players had had a very busy week with different sporting events, they threw everything into the game and came away with the win, 14-8. Ka mau te wehi!

The Westmere Wizards played the Richmond Nets on Monday night. This was an action packed game with lots of scoring. The kids worked really well together for the full game - we didn’’t have any reserves, so the boys gave it their all. Thanks to Charlie and Emery for helping us out this week.

Another awesome game for the Westmere Hops this week, great to see the whole team getting involved and the boys out there doing what they love!

Netball - North Harbour

Our Year 4 team played against Ponsonby on Monday night in their third grading game. They are showing some great skill in their passing and spacing on the court.  The team secured a good win, keeping the competition scoreless with the final score: 12-0. Poppy Wright was awarded player of the day.

The year 6 team played on Wednesday night against Chelsea School.  They were a strong side with some skilled players but our team fought hard and came away with a high scoring win 23-15 (a huge number of goals to have been scored in a game at this level).  Player of the day was Phoebe Woods for some fantastic defence work in the circle.

Netball - Windmill Park

The Westmere Starlight year 4 team won their second game 5-2 on Thursday night.  They all played really well and it was hard picking player of the day but it was awarded to Sadie Walbran.

The Westmere Stars (year 5/6) played the Y6 Elim Rockets on Wednesday night. This was another tough grading game for our team, but their teamwork was really outstanding this week, and they played well right through the game (with no reserves).

The year 3 Hummingbirds netball team have had their first two games of the season, and for most of the team this is their first year of playing netball. The first game saw us playing Diocesan, and Chloe bravely played for Dio as they were a player short, earning her player of the day. Our second game against Newton was on a very muddy court, with the girls looking like they had been playing rugby by the end of the game! Some great intercepts by Silvia earned her player of the day. The energy and positivity of the girls is fantastic and we look forward to more and more games!!!

Snowsports Team

This week the slightly reduced (due to sickness) team had their first go at a full gate course. Coach videoed everyone so they could watch and evaluate their turns.  Everyone is progressing really well!

Swim League

We had our second swim league meet on Saturday and had enough swimmers to enter two teams so Westmere dominated the meet in numbers! We had some individual and relay wins and lots of kids giving swim racing a go for the first time and even trying strokes that they were unsure about.  Well done especially to our year 3 & 4 swimmers who, while the youngest there, swim their hearts out for the team.
