Sports Newsletter - Term 2, Week 2

Westmere Sport —

We’ve had a great start to the busy winter terms. Basketball has begun again, flippaball and some netball has started for the year.

Inter-school Swimming Competition

On Thursday last week the top year 5 and 6 swimmers from our swimming sports competed at AUT Millennium in the central zone inter-school swimming competition. The team definitely won the prize for the most supportive and encouraging School - you could hear Westmere’s support for their team-mates from all over the pool which was great to see and hear.

We also had some great results in the pool:

Maggie Atkinson (year 6) came first in all three events that she competed in (10 year old girls 25m freestyle, 25m breaststroke and 25m backstroke).

We also had many of our team making the finals, well done swimmers!

Flippaball

Our two flippaball teams have had a fantastic start to the season.  They’ve both played two games.  The Sharks (year 5/6) won their first game against the Dio Starfish 6-0 and their second game against the Epsom Sharks 6-0. The team are really showing some great skill in the pool.

The Dolphins are also moving around the pool really well and showing great team work through their passing and movement down the pool.  Their first game against SKBS Red they won 4-2 and second game they drew 3-3 against the Ōrākei Octopi.

Basketball

Basketball is back!

Basketball is back for Term 2! Last week, our basketball-loving kids hit the court with enthusiasm and energy. The camaraderie and teamwork were remarkable, setting the stage for an exciting Term 2 ahead.

Team Mako - Tom Clark LS5

Team Mako had some star fill-ins this week who lifted our game! Thanks for your support and great team play Presley and Jackson.

Great to play the super Westmere Taniwha this week. We really liked having assistant coach Miro give us great tips at half time to keep us focussed.

It was great being back out there hooping with my team. I also enjoyed subbing in for Team Mako and the Gators who had a great first game! Go Westmere!

Westmere Gators

New to the court for the first time, the Gators did so well and really got into the spirit of things. Topped off nicely with a win to get them started!

Netball - North Harbour

The two Netball North Harbour teams had a great start to their season last week.  On Monday night the year 3/4 team played their first game of 7 a side netball so it was all about learning their new positions but they did remarkably well at figuring it all out and they came out with a strong win against Waiheke with the final score 6-0. Ellie Atkinson was awarded player of the day.

The year 6 team also had a strong start to in their first grading game with a win (9-1) against Glamorgan 6/2.  Some fabulous intercepts and defence by player of the day, Marlowe Henshall.

Snowsport Team

Our skiers and boarder have had a fun first two weeks training at Snowplanet on Friday mornings. They’ve been practising their turns down the mountain to get their technique refined before they work more on speed.

Run Club

We won’t have run club this Wednesday 10 May so that the kids can save their energy for cross country. Good luck to all our regular runners!
