Sports Newsletter - Weeks 2/3 Term 4

Westmere Sport —

Amazing effort by Team Westmere at the Auckland Marathon this past weekend! Some super running. Term 4 sports are all back in full swing and lots of fun is being had and skills are being learnt.

Auckland Marathon 2023

We had a 20 strong team of young and old(er) runners doing various distances at the Auckland Marathon event on Sunday.  Despite the forecast, the rain managed to stay away this year thankfully.

All the children that ran did such a great job of challenging themselves and achieving goals. As well as having fun, we had some incredible results too, many from our regular run clubbers.

In the 0-9 age group in the 5km distance, we had three of our girls in the top 10 and two more in the top 20.  Charlotte van Leeuwen was second in the category (by just 34 seconds) with a super speedy time of just 25:34.  Mackenzie Archibald and Scarlett Lawson weren't far behind. Go Girls!!

In the Kids Marathon (2.2km), Sophie Clark was 9th female to finish with an exceptionally fast time of 8:14.  Nico Keen was 13th in her category with a time of 9:31.

We also had Ike Dreaver (year 5) run the 11km distance over the Harbour Bridge!  Dad, Andrew ran with him and said:

The race started at Smales Farm Bus Station, ran along the motorway, over the Auckland Harbour Bridge (which was a super cool experience), through Westhaven and finished at Victoria Park. Ike ran with me the whole way and we achieved a time of 67 mins 21 secs, which was an incredible effort. Minimum age to participate in the 11 km was 10 years old, which he actually only qualified for by two weeks or so, and he placed 28th out of 57 for the 10-14 years age group.

Ike said it was “easy” (apart from the steep incline of the Harbour Bridge) and he was amazed at how high it was at the top of the Bridge.  All that training paid off Ike - well done!

Touch

The summer touch season started in week 3.  It absolutely poured down for the 4pm round, but that didn’t deter the Warriors Year 1/2, Blazers Year 1/2 and the Tigers Year 3/4.  Well done for playing your hearts out even with sodden shoes!

Tangaroa Year 3/4, the Wolves Year 3/4 and the Knights Year 5/6 started the season off with great wins.

Awesome work to all those who played tough for the first time.  Here’s hoping for more sunshine in the coming weeks!

Basketball

The basketball season kicked off in week 2.  The Kahu and Tangaroa played each other in their first week.  It was a hot and sticky afternoon but the teams fought it out. The Tangaroa were the winners on the day.
