School Life

This Week

As outlined in previous newsletters, the curriculum was updated again at the end of 2025. This means the progressions we used to evaluate your child last year are no longer valid/in use. You may have noticed that your child's goal wheels are no longer showing on their report page in Hero. We have had to load the new progressions so we can evaluate against them, so we have archived the 2025 goal wheels. You can find the 2025 wheels in the menu on your child's page.

The Minister is currently in the process of reforming reporting to parents. Progress descriptors are being introduced. These 5 descriptors will be used to describe progress being made against the year level of the curriculum that your child is in (not above or below), e.g. if your child is in Year 3, they will be assessed against the Year 3 curriculum descriptors, whether they are working at that level or not.

The progress descriptors will align to progress markers, which are derived from the teaching progressions.

Currently, the teaching progressions are what you see when you look at the goal wheels. Below is a sample of the progress markers.

Unfortunately, because the changes are happening at a rapid pace, the progress markers are not complete and haven't been released to schools yet. This means that there may be changes to our reporting again at midyear.

As we continue to navigate these changes, we will try to keep you as up to date and informed as possible.

Goal wheels will begin to be updated over the coming weeks. We will notify you when these are completed for Term 1. Due to a short term we will hold Whānau Forum at the beginning of Term 2.

Enroling siblings and enrolments for 2027

If you have a four-year-old turning five this year, we would love it if you enrol them as soon as possible so we can add them to our waitlist/ballot for 2027. It's helpful for us to know who's coming in advance as we work on class numbers and placements. If you are out of zone, you can read about our enrolment criteria here.

Construction Project - Garnet Road - Road disruptions next week

There are major construction works happening across the road next week and there will be firm exclusion zones, lane closures and physical barriers as well as an alternative pedestrian crossing. Traffic management will be manning the crossing in the afternoon but note that there are going to be disruptions all throughout the day. Please take extra time to plan your morning and afternoon pick ups next week - they will be disruptive and we ask you to please be patient and use an alternative route.

Wacky Walking Wheely Wednesday

Park further away and get your kids walking or wheeling to school next week as part of WoW Week (and this is a perfect way to avoid the traffic disruptions that will be happening!). To make it fun, we're encouraging everyone to dress up your wheels or have fancy feet/shoes on Wednesday and have some fun with your Wacky Walking Wheely attire!

Extra Curricular Activities

Netball - Terms 2 and 3

We are building our teams for Terms 2 and 3 and are short a few players. If you have a child keen to play please register your interest here. We are still short players for the following teams:

  • 2x Year 4 players to play at North Harbour on Mondays

  • 2x Year 3 players to play at Windmill Park on Thursdays

  • More Year 5/6 players to start a new team at Windmill Park on Wednesdays

We endeavour to place every child who wishes to play sport at Westmere into a school team. Sometimes this isn't able to happen due to not enough players to create a team or too many players in existing teams. We avoid overloading teams as children do not get enough game time, and it creates too many logistics for the coaches/managers. We will put your child on a waitlist if there isn't a team for them, and if any gaps open up, we will let you know.

  • PREVIOUS PLAYERS/TEAMS: You may have roll-over players from last year who want to play together. Please email your team lists to sport@westmere.school.nz. Please note that we will add any newbies to your team if you don't have enough players.

  • NEW PLAYERS: Register your interest in the link above so we can place you in a team.

  • UNIFORMS: Bike shorts and school shirt (no more skorts)

Basketball - Term 2 - Expressions of Interest

If your child is keen to play basketball in Term 2, please register your interest here. Our current teams are full but are looking for any newbies that might like to play. We require 7-8 players to start a new team for Year 3/4 and Year 5/6. If we are unable to make these teams happen, we will add your child to a waitlist.
