Parent Reading

A group of parents who are rostered on a day that suits them to read 1:1 with children who need some extra reading practise (they will have a box of books to choose from). This takes place within the classroom. We are always looking for more volunteers. If you can spare an hour a week and are interested in helping please contact Kylie McBeth at Kylie@westmere.school.nz

Playgrounds

There are many play areas for the children:

  • School field at the back of the school.

  • The Junior School playground is by Studio 1.

  • The Junior Mini Mt Westmere and courtyard area by Studios 1 & 2.

  • The senior adventure playground

  • "Mount Westmere," the grassy hillock beside the "Village" classrooms where the slide is situated.

  • Pohutukawa Park area

  • Basketball Courts

To ensure safe play the children are asked to abide by the following rules:

  • Be fair, share

  • No pushing or pulling others

  • Use equipment appropriately

Pōwhiri

Pōwhiri are held on the first day of each term to welcome new families to the school and NUONI oversees the observance of tikanga, Māori customary practices, to ensure all students are educated within a bicultural environment. Parents and whānau are welcome to join us for tea and coffee in the hall foyer when the pōwhiri is finished. The Pōwhiri is a traditional Māori welcome.

Reporting to Parents

Each year we provide opportunities for parents to learn more about the curriculum and other aspects of school life through open days, curriculum-focused newsletters and parent evenings. These are very valuable ways to better understand "Education in the 21st Century", which in many ways is quite different from how we were educated. We encourage you to participate in these opportunities we make available.

Term 1

Meet the Studio

This is an opportunity to meet your child's Studio teachers and hear about the daily routines.

Whānau Forum

An opportunity for you to spend up to an hour with your child talking about their learning achievements and next steps. Your child's teachers will also catch up with you to share their perspectives on how things are progressing and give you a chance to ask any questions.

Hero

Reporting is done in an ongoing way through Hero. You will receive emails when teachers post about your child's learning. It is important to log on to Hero throughout the year if you would like to track your child's progress as this is shown through the goal wheels for Reading, Writing and Mathematics.

The goal wheels show the progress that your child is making through the curriculum. If children are completing 25% of the goal wheel at their level they are making expected progress in line with national expectations.
