Learning Support

WIS —

At Whangārei Intermediate School we have a learning support HUB. This is where the Learning Support Coordinator and the Learning Support Assistants work with students on a one-on-one or small group basis. The school makes a commitment to the provision, where possible, of additional resources to students who would benefit from further learning support especially Literacy and Numeracy including English as a Second Language. Programs include: 1. Literacy Acceleration: providing individual and small group situations to assist with reading, spelling, and writing. 2. Student Support: MoE funded support for students who would benefit in class with extra learning or behavior support may get funding for assistive technology or teacher aide support in the class program. 3. ESOL: students who require additional English Language development. 4. Specialised Support: Where possible, the Special Needs Committee organizes specialized counseling of students with social and emotional difficulties. 5. Special Programmes: We use local providers or staff to run specialized group programs to develop social and personal skills. These can be short-term or longer programs.
