Te Whānau o Kauika

TeRingakaha Tia-Ward —

Each whānau in our kura has a unique name. Along with each whānau name, each class has been given a name in relation to that particular whānau. This week we will look at Te Whānau o Kauika and the four classes named within.

Te Whānau o Kauika - This whānau has been named after a sacred Pā located on the slopes of the Pukenui hills.

Te Whānau o Kauika and Te Whānau o Tawatāwhiti are the guardians of the minders of our people.

Kauika- R5 Kauika is the name given in honour of Kauika Pā. It is also the name given to Te Whānau o Kauika. Unfortunately, we don't fully understand what the name Kauika means, that is part of our new learning journey.

Kāhiwi - R6 Kāhiwi is the name of Room 6 and Kāhiwi is in relation to the hills that make Kauika. Kāhiwi = Hill

Kopani - R7 Kopani is the name given to Room 7. Kopani is in relation to the mist (Kohu) that covers the Kauika creating a beautiful picture. Kopani = to cover/ covered

Kohu - R8 Kohu is the name given to Room 8. It is the mist that covers Kauika pā. Kohu = Mist

Karewa - R23 Karewa is the name given to Room 23. It is in terms of the rising mist. Ka rewa te kohu = The rise of the mist from Kauika. Ka Rewa = To rise.

All these names are given to enable our students to explore the nature of our local stories, people, sites of significance, and much more.
