TE REO MĀORI @ WIS

TeRingakaha Tia-Ward —

"Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori" - Tā Himi Hēnare

Kia ora mai tātou and welcome back to Term 4. This week is just a quick recap on the previous two lessons for you.

"It's cool to speak Te Reo Māori"

Tūmahi: Tūmahi are doing words or verbs. Have a kōrero with your whānau at home and create a list to display on your wall. I find the back of the toilet door provides a good way to learn and reflect. Here are some examples of Tūmahi and their meanings,

Hikoi - Walk

Moe - Sleep

Menemene - Smile

Kata - Laugh

Kimo - wink

Pōwhiri - wave/welcome

A tip: writing as many words in English then finding the Te Reo Māori equivalent helps create a big list, choose 3 to learn a week.

Ka: “Ka” is a sentence starter used mainly to show future tense. Ka lets the listener know we are talking about the future. Ka is followed by a Tūāhua or Tūmahi. This week we will look at “Ka tūmahi”.

Using the word bank we looked at in the last newsletter apply the sentence starter “ka” to tell the listener which tense we are talking about for example,

Ka haere - Going

Ka moe - Sleep

Ka peke - Jump

Ka korero - Talk

Karawhiua!
