Te Whānau o Tawatāwhiti
Each whānau in our kura has a unique name. Along with each whānau name, each class has been given a name in relation to that particular whānau. This week we will look at Te Whānau o Tawatāwhiti and the four classes named within.
Te Whānau o Tawatāwhiti - This whānau has been named after one of the largest Pā sites to the north of Parihaka.
Te Whānau o Tawatāwhitiand Te Whānau Kauika o are the guardians of the minders of our people.
Te Pā Maioro- R9 Te Pā Maioro is the name given to Room 9. It speaks of the fortified nature of Tawatāwhiti. Te Pā = Village, Maioro = Fortified
Te Takimano - R10 Te Takimano is the name given to Room 10 and speaks of the multitude of people who called Tawatāwhiti home and their safe haven. Te Takimano = The Multitudes
Te Wao - R17 Te Wao is the name given to Room 17 and is in relation to the forest that cloaks Tawatāwhiti and the surrounding slopes. Te Wao = The Forest
Te Toropuke - R18 Te Toropuke is the name given to Room 18. A toropuke is in relation to the slopes and curves of Tawatāwhiti. Te Toropuke = The Slopes
All these names are given to enable our students to explore the nature of our local stories, people, sites of significance, and much more.
