Puoro / Music 🎼

Kat Brown —

We have had a tino pai time learning and exploring in Puoro (Music) this term...

Playing different instruments in the room, like the Cajón, a box-shaped percussion instrument originally from Peru and learning to use the Purerehua. Maori traditionally used Purerehua to call the rains to wet their crops, to bring lizards out of hiding (the lizards mistakenly thinking there were lots of insects nearby), at tangi (funerals), as well as to simply make sound. We have also learnt about the musical alphabet, which has helped us read and write music, even composing our own original pieces and recording them onto Flip Grid.

The WIS school band have been working very hard collaborating and learning new songs for 2023 and already have 4 under their belt ranging in styles from Axl Rose to Miley Cyrus! 2 members of the band joined me on stage at this year's 2023 Art Beat, which was a great experience for them.

The WISreCHOIRments have learnt 4 new acapella songs, growing in confidence and experimenting with harmonies that sound absolutely beautiful. Having already done one performance for the Year 7’s in Whaea Gemma’s class. Ka mau te wehi to both of these talented groups of tamariki!

Next Term, I will be looking for Year 7’s to join us in Choir and Band.
