This is Niwi the Kiwi!

The photo above shows Niwi. The photo below shows Mr. Kelly congratulating Riley, from Room 7, for her entry into naming the kiwi.

Whangarei Intermediate was involved in a Kiwi Release Day last Saturday 13th Feb. As part of the build-up to the day, a competition was held to name a kiwi. Riley's winning entry was 'Niwi'. The meaning behind the name is that the kiwi is a native bird belonging to New Zealand. Riley also used the Māori word iwi, meaning a kinship group. She combined the letter N which refers to the first letter in New Zealand and the word iwi, to name the Kiwi "Niwi". Very Clever Riley!
