Māori Medium Learning at Te Whānau o Waimirirangi

In Te Whānau o Waimirirangi, ākonga engage in Māori Medium education through our localised curriculum, Kia Māori Mai. Learning is grounded in Te Ao Māori and includes core curriculum areas such as Pānui, Tuhituhi, Pāngarau, and Akoranga (learning across the curriculum).

We are proud to offer a kaupapa Māori learning environment where te reo Māori and tikanga Māori are central to all aspects of school life.

Commitment to Excellence in Te Reo Māori

Whānau who wish to enrol must be fully committed to supporting their tamariki to learn te reo Māori to the highest level. This includes actively using te reo at home and upholding Māori values, knowledge, and practices in everyday life.

It is a privilege to be chosen to be part of Te Whānau o Waimirirangi—not a guarantee. Our kaupapa requires shared commitment, respect for tikanga, and strong whānau involvement.

Te Whānau o Waimirirangi is a Māori space that goes beyond language immersion—it is a place where identity, culture, and language are nurtured and celebrated.

Whānau Expectations

To support the success of our ākonga, whānau are expected to:

  • Commit to the ongoing use and development of te reo Māori at home and in the wider community

  • Attend whānau hui and kura events

  • Support kaupapa such as Haerenga, Puanga, Kapa Haka, marae stays, and day trips

  • Work in partnership with kaiako to uphold high expectations for learning, behaviour, and cultural integrity

  • Build strong, respectful relationships with staff and other whānau

  • Uphold the tikanga, values, and routines of the kura
