Term 2 Learning about Puanga

Paul Botica —

This terms learning focus is Puanga

This term classes in English Medium Classes are learning about Puanga which is observed by Ngā puhi. Puanga is celebrated over a period of time, a month or longer. There was often preparation time followed by a period of wānanga (learning time). The first moon in the month of June - July is typically the time when stars like Puanga and Matariki set, this is the time of reflection and to remember loved ones. Approximately a fortnight later Puanga and Matariki rise again in the east. Puanga is a key astronomical marker for northern iwi, possibly because it sits higher in the night sky and is a much brighter star than those in the Matariki cluster. Aspects that classes are learning about this term under Puanga include Te Maramataka (The māori lunar calendar), Tapu and Noa and Ngā Whetu (The Stars).
