Refreshed Mathematics and Statistics/Pangarau Curriculum Released
After multiple changes of curricular for maths over the past 18 months the Ministry of Education has released a final version to be used from next year. Read below for some more information.
Key changes for Mathematics and Statistics.
The levelling system that has been in effect since the early 90's has now been changed to a phase system which in the Primary area has gone from 4 levels to 3 phases.
Years 1-3 are called Phase 1, Years 4-6, Phase 2 and Years 7 and 8, Phase 3
There is an increase in specific learning objectives to be taught over the year
There are clearly defined learning objective statements at every year level.
There is a stronger emphasis on number structure and properties.
The specified time for the teaching is 5 hours a week for Mathematics. (already happening)
There are increased learning expectations for younger students when to learn mathematical concepts and processes.
A structured teaching and learning approach for class programmes with key features are expected to be included.
Ministry-funded text, workbooks and online resources for students and teachers.
This term staff at WIS have been undertaking Maths and English professional development after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays in both Mathematics and Statistics and English. Our kaiako will also be involved in two callback days after school finishes to further prepare for Maths implementation next year.
