Kowhai Hub

Abby Bills-Strange —

Tena koutou,

Last week Kowhai Hub students had the privilege of meeting and learning from Harold the Giraffe in support of the Life Education Trust. Students undertook lessons around Digital Citizenship, what we can do to keep ourselves and others safe on digital platforms. Harold (and Ange, the facilitator) were humorous in discussions and connected well with the students prior knowledge of gaming, social media and apps they use today. Students particularly enjoyed Harolds jokes and ability to eat fruit.

Kowhai and Kowhai Iti have also been discovering how we belong as part of our Inquiry. Students created a piece of art where they drew what is important to them as well, how they look side by side. See a couple of examples below from students. Students are creating visual pepeha and have wrote out their own pepeha online. It is great to see the authentic connections between each other and the exploration of their culture, ethnicities and values.

Kowhai Nui and Manuka have been completing chapter chat activities based on the novel gangsta granny by David Walliams. Teachers will read a chapter each day and ask questions to the students help them gain understanding, work on their comprehension skills and oral language. Here are some activities based on key events in the latest chapters. Students have to use their imagination to interpret what they hear in a creative way. We have had some great Kahoots, drawings, posters, models and fact sheets made.
