Dancing Like the Stars 2022

Tracey Young —

Over the last 12 years the Christchurch City Council has successfully funded a dance in schools programme and Wharenui School has been part of this for 11 years.

Professional dance tutors came to school, three times a week and this year the dance style was Tango. The aims of the programme are to encourage participation, increase physical activity and use of dance as a recreational tool. Feedback from past years has shown positive short term and long term benefits being reported by students, teachers and dance tutors.

This year the Year 7 and 8 group performed at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Wednesday night. A huge thank you to everyone who helped especially our dress makers, make up artists, hair stylists, and to everyone who came on the night.

I enjoyed doing something new and my favourite thing was performing at the Isaac Royal Theatre on Wednesday night. It was a hard dance to do, but I am pleased I was part of it.

I have done Dancing Like the Stars before at my last school, but this time I enjoyed getting dressed up and having make up on. I thought we looked great. It was a difficult dance to learn and I do not enjoy slow dances.

This was my second year of Dancing Like the Stars, and I found the style hard to learn. I enjoyed the performance night when it all came together. It was good to watch the others school perform. Gabby, Joey and Amelia who use to be at Wharenui did Dancing Like the Stars years ago, are in a professional Salsa dance group, performed at the show.
