Pedagogical Practices

To strengthen teacher understanding of a responsive curriculum, provide sufficient opportunities to learn and effective teaching practices to improve student progress and achievement.

Teachers have completed professional development in Mathematics, including information from Just in Time Maths, Accelerated Learning in Mathematics (ALiM) and the Curriculum Refresh. ALiM groups have been running in the Years 3-8 learning teams. We are seeing positive results in terms of engagement and progress in Mathematics.
We are using a structured literacy approach to teach reading in Years 1-2 called the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA). We have also trained two staff members in Reading Recovery. Both of these approaches have had a positive impact on early reading strategies for our junior learners.
Waenga hub has been working in collaboration with the RTLB team to strengthen writing practices in Year 3/4. The team have observed that student motivation, self-efficacy and engagement was high. Most students were able to articulate what their writing focus was and work towards achieving this.
Each learning team has submitted a deep learning exemplar to be moderated by the New Zealand NPDL, resulting in two exemplars going global!
We are currently refining PE, Physical Activity and Health Long Term plans based on student, parent and staff consultation and feedback.

Learning Partnerships

To serve ākonga through effective learning partnerships.

We have utilised the skills and knowledge of Wiremu Gray and Carolyn Stuart with embedding our new values and cultural narrative within our local curriculum contexts.
We have engaged with Mokopuna Maori Art Design and Pūtaringamotu expertsin the design of a new school logo and values, these will be formally used from 2024 onwards.
Staff are currently learning about Te Whare Mauri Ora and using the fundamental Te Ao Maori concepts for curriculum design.
We have provided parents/whānau with the opportunity to learn about our programmes of work through programmes such as Reading Together and our Curriculum Over Coffee sessions.
Hero is our main communication platform. Teachers and students are using Hero to create learning posts which share an update of their progress in learning areas. Parents are able to provide feedback/comment on these learning posts.
