Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival

Cate Mallon —

On Thursday 2nd November the Wharenui Senior Choir performed as part of the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival. This event is held at the Town Hall over several nights each year. This year there were about 1000 Year 5-8 students participating each night from over 100 Canterbury schools in the massed choir. In addition to the massed choir there are also opportunities to be part of a representative choir, orchestra or concert band. It is a great opportunity to have professional musical coaching and be part of a performance including amazing lighting in addition to the music.

Our Senior Choir was part of the massed choir. We were very lucky to be sitting centre stage right next to the organ. Together we sang 10 different songs that we have been practising for 3 terms! We had to learn all the words and a lot of the songs are divided into parts which we also had to learn. During our choir sessions we have learnt to read a bit of musical notation as well as enjoying some musical games and breathing exercises with bubbles! This was a great way to end a full year of musical practise with such a fun and talented group of students.

Here are some photos of our night out.  A huge thank you to Anke, Candice, Mel and Cate for assisting with the choir this year!
