Kahikatea Hub Camp

Cate Mallon —

This year the Year 7 and 8 students had 4 action packed days and 3 nights at the Omaka Scout Camp.

Day 1: started with surfing but due to the wind this was cut short. Everyone got a chance to either body board or surf. The afternoon was spent at the Spencer Park playground then we travelled to our campsite. Team building games were played followed by tent pitching and bed organisations. A cold night in the tents but all asleep around 11.30pm.

Day 2: A walk to the Groynes followed by rafting and river crossing. A big day but a lot of fun. Food fear factor was the highlight of the evening entertainment. Most were asleep by 10.00pm.

Day 3 of camp: Missed out on sailing sadly due an issue outside our control. A day of games, swimming, shifting the boys to the hall and girls to the tents for our final night. Another fun day with good weather.

Day 4 Camp: The day started early with a packing of bags, tents down, air beds, and stretchers folded up. A breakfast of leftovers and because of the great quality food then was not as much as usual. Tents were then packed up, the trailer filled, big cleaning job (as we always leave a place better than we found it) we were off to Adrenalin Forest. I was really proud that every child had a go but special mention for Ayyub who completed Level 6, the highest one. After a fish and chip lunch at Spencer Park, we headed back to school.

A very special thanks to Tai and Kerri for their wonderful work in the kitchen and the quality food. A huge thanks to Janet, Cate and Kieran for all their work and to my student teacher Hannah for experiencing her first school camp as a leader. Tracey, Beaven, Terenz, Sam and Kerri who all came out for some of the time which was really appreciated. A special mention for Daral for bringing out the trailer, picking up our fish and chips, and always being there for us.

The children this year were a very special group who showed grit and resilience by giving all challenges a go. Collaborating with each other and showing their strong communication skills. They made us laugh, looked out for each other and were really helpful. It was great to see everyone having fun and enjoying their time on camp.
