Welcome to our kura!

We are thrilled to have you and your child join our learning whānau and begin your educational journey with us at Whītau School. Together, we’ll explore, grow, and embrace our vision of: “Learning to take us places.”

Your journey begins on this very page! Please take the time to read the information, and we look forward to welcoming you to our kura.

STEP 1: Check you are in zone!

Have a look at the map below to see if your address in our zone!

All students who live within the geographic home zone shown on the map below shall be entitled to enrol at the school. Addresses on both sides of boundary roads are included unless otherwise stated.

STEP 2: Enrolment Form

If you live within our zone, your child is welcome to join our kura by clicking on the link and completing this enrolment form . If your address is out of zone, please see the “Out of Zone Ballot” section of this page for further information.

If you would like any help with the enrolment process, please pop into the School Office. Our friendly School Secretary or Executive Officer will happily guide you through completing the form online and help organise all the information you and your child need to start school smoothly.

To confirm your family’s residency within our school zone, you will need to provide two documents verifying your residential address. This helps us ensure all our ākonga are in the correct zone and ready to become part of our Whītau School whānau.

STEP 3: Book a tour

Once you have completed your enrolment form and paperwork, our school office will call you to make an appointment with Associate Principals Róisín Anglesey NE-Y3 or Hannah Thomas Y4-Y6. They will give you a tour of our kura, showing you the classrooms, hall, sandpit, bike track, music room, library, gardens, art room, playgrounds, and outdoor learning spaces. During the tour, Róisín and Hannah will explain our learning programmes, routines, school values, support systems, and you will get the chance to ask questions.

STEP 4: Start!

Your child is welcome to start their learning journey at Whītau School as soon as the enrolment process is complete, often as early as the very next day!

New Entrant Enrolments:

New entrant enrolments include an extra step to help your child feel comfortable and excited about starting kura. Families are invited to visit Whītau School twice before their child’s first day. These visits give children a chance to explore the school, meet staff and classmates, and get a feel for the routines and environment. The first visit runs from 9:00-11:00 am, and the second visit from 9:00 am-12:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

New entrant enrolments also require two important documents to be sighted. Your child's

  • Your child's full name

  • Mother's and father's full name

Out of Zone Enrolments:

If you have checked the map and your address is out of zone but you would still like your child to be part of our kura whānau, please follow the process outlined below.

The School Board will operate a ballot system for 'out of zone' enrolments.

Enrolment of children who live outside the geographic Home Zone is governed by the requirements of Section 11F of the Education Act 1989, and instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11F of the Education Act 1989.

The number of current enrolment places will be determined by the Principal on the basis of current available learning space in classrooms, current and projected class numbers and the current staffing allocation and school roll.

You will need to apply for an out of zone place through our ballot system. We have an Out of Zone Enrolment Form to complete and return to the School Office.

Each year the board will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received. Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority.

The order of priority in which applicants who live outside a school’s home zone are to be offered places at the school is as follows:

  1. first priority must be given to any applicant who is accepted for enrolment in a special programme run by the school. (This priority category does not apply at Whītau School because the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary for Education.)

  2. second priority must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a current student of the school;

  3. third priority must be given to any student who is the sibling of a former student of the school;

  4. fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school;

  5. fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school:

  6. sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.

If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.

Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.

Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.
