News from the Kākano Team

Amy Collins —

Each team takes a turn at sharing news from their team.

It has been great having whanau visiting the classrooms between 8.30 and 9.00am each day.  This is something new for our Kākano children and for some of our Kākano parents and caregivers also.  We look forward to your continued visits.

Last week Whītau School children were fortunate to have 20-30 minutes one off session learning tennis skills such as the correct way to hold a tennis racket and hitting the ball to another player.  These sessions were facilitated by two tennis coaches from the Shirley Tennis Club.  Rooms 1, 2 & 3 enjoyed participating and putting these new skills into practice.  They did a great job balancing a tennis ball on their racket while walking up and down the court.

Room 1 students have been busy welcoming new children who are currently having their morning visits in preparation for starting school very soon.  This has been a great opportunity for Room 1 to demonstrate the Whītau School values of Be a Learner, Be Responsible and Be Respectful.  They have been positive role models by sharing their learning and helping to make the new children feel welcome in their new learning environment.

Every Friday morning Rooms 1, 2 & 3 meet together in their Learning Centre for 15-20 minutes to share their learning and to check in to see how the week has been for everyone.  It has been great to see each class share an item that they have completed throughout the week.  The children are happy to stand up at the front to speak and share with others.  This provides another opportunity for them to begin developing their speaking skills in front of an audience and also develop their social skills.

There is one business workshop remaining before our School Wide Market Day next Thursday morning.  The children are looking forward to spending their hard earned money on a range of amazing market items that have been created in the junior, middle and senior parts of the school.  The children have engaged well throughout these workshops and have begun to develop an understanding around earning money and saving for a specific goal.

We wish you a great rest of the week.
