Eco Club Update June 2022

Lucy Ferguson —

This term the Eco Club has been learning about native birds in Ōtautahi and our Wigram community.

The Eco Club decided to make sustainable bird feeders to feed the birds over the winter months. We hope that Kereru, Tui, Piwakawaka, Starling and Black Birds come to our bird feeders to eat the bird food.

How to make them:

Step 1: We made a base out of orange peel. (Remember to cut the orange in half and scoop out the orange fruit). You can also use a baking paper roll.

Step 2: We mixed bird seed and peanut butter together to make the bird food full of protein and seeds.

Step 3: Use kebab sticks to poke holes through the orange peels. This made it stronger too.

Step 4: Then we pushed string through the holes so it can be tied onto a tree.

Step 5: Sit back and watch the birds feast.

We did it because we want lots more beautiful birds to hang around our school. We also made a movie about us making them. So please watch this below if this sounds like something you would like to do too.
