From our students ...

Food for Thought

Recently Ruru went to New World to work alongside them to learn about nutrition and healthy eating. Below are two pieces of writing from our students about their experience.

This week in Ruru Jessica from Food for Thought, came to talk to us about nutrition and healthy food. She showed us what foods give us protein, iron, fibre, carbohydrates and vitamins. On Friday Ruru went on a trip to New World to find some healthy foods to eat. We got heaps of food for shared lunch such as bananas, pineapple, hummus, plain popcorn kernels, crackers, oranges and muesli bars. We also learnt that children/teens are only supposed 3 teaspoons of sugar per day. We also want to give a big thanks to James the store manager of Wigram New World ( the supermarket ) and last but not least Jessica ( Food for Thought) we really enjoyed having this great experience.

This week in Ruru Jessica from Food for Thought came to help and talk about healthy eating. She also gave us some tips to keep our body healthy like how much sugar and all the other things people need to keep healthy. Did you know that a child\teen needs only three teaspoons of sugar, and an Up and Go drink has 7 teaspoons of sugar which is more than double a child\teens normal diet?

Then on Friday each homeroom went to a New World up the road from our school. We had $180 to buy snacks for our class. First went Miss Bunting's home room, then Mrs Lee and then Miss Ferguson. We also want to give a big thanks to James the store owner, Jessica the Food for Thought lady, and also thanks to Donna, Michelle, Kath, Jessica Te Hari’s mum, Kristy, Adele, Nina, and Mr Hines for helping the homerooms to go to the New World. We had the best experience ever.
