Student Leadership 2024

Welcome to your Student Leaders for 2024!

Our School Student Leadership team is made up of; House leaders, Student Council, Physical Activity Leaders, Digi Leaders, Peer Mediators, Librarians, Garden Leaders, Eco Club Leaders, Huritini Student Council and Ukelele Leaders. These leadership positions are voted upon by the children and staff of Wigram Primary School.

Our School really values these leadership positions as it provides students with opportunities to have meaningful input into school decisions, enhancing students’ sense of belonging and connectedness to our school community. These opportunities are also a way of enabling students to develop our key competencies. (Thinking, relating to others, Using language, symbols, and texts, Managing self, Participating and contributing).

House Leaders 2024:
Tatiana, April,
Aimee, Tyler,
Anna, Ella,
Honor, & Brenna Fletcher.

We have four houses at Wigram – Harvard (Red), SkyHawk (Green), Mustang (Yellow) and Kittyhawk (Blue) for students and staff. When children start school, they are placed in one of the houses. If they have siblings at Wigram, we ensure siblings stay in the same school house.

Each year we have a team of school house leaders from year six who present a speech to their whole house group and are voted in by the students and staff.

These young leaders have an important role in our school, leading their respective school house teams and acting as positive role models for all the students. They meet regularly with Miss Ferguson to discuss, brainstorm and plan ways to make school an enjoyable and welcoming environment for our community. This includes planning the termly Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) reward which they complete in house groups. They count every Kahu card in the school for house points and present these in assembly, followed by the Kahu card draw. They also lead the new students into the hall for our termly Mihi Whakatau and organise a house relay during Athletics day.

Student Council 2024:
Year 4: Suho, Evelyn, Emersen, Somya
Year 5: Tammy, Mia, Kylie, Ray
Year 6: Josephine, Poet, Broden

Each year, years 4-6 present a speech in front of their learning hub and the students and teachers in that learning space vote on who they think would make the best candidates.

The School Council benefits the whole school as it gives opportunities for pupils to communicate feelings and opinions to teachers and support staff as well as influencing decisions that are made. This group of students attend fortnightly meetings to share and discuss school activities and topics raised by our student community at class council meetings. As well as this they have a number of specific tasks including supporting staff with the organisation of school events such as a disco and undertaking specific roles and responsibilities to fundraise.

Physical Education Leaders 2024:
Sport Leaders: Sarah, Kylie, Abby, Tyler, Alex, Honor, Liam.
Physical Activity Leaders (PAL’s): Kylie, Abby, Liam, Nathaniel, Pippa, Millie, Jordan, Ethan, Ivan, Zoey, Muhammad, Sarah, Yadullah, Honor, Alex, Tyler, Ronak, Sajjad, Anika, Sayum, Natasha, Franco.

Our aim is to develop and apply leadership skills in sport by providing a number of physical activities for students to participate in during lunch times. At Wigram Primary School the PAL’s will be running activities during lunch times for the younger students in the school. PAL’s will work in pairs and take turns at the different roles required of them including planning and running games, looking after the sports shed, and helping with the organisation of any school sporting events. This year our Sports Leaders were given the opportunity to attend a PAL’s workshop run by Sport Canterbury. This group of students learned how to be inclusive, cooperate effectively, and how to adapt and alter a game on the spot to ensure everyone is able to participate and have fun.
