Our Values Series : HEART Values

What does it mean in our school?

The values we aspire to within the school all relate to HEART.  Over the coming weeks I will share our thinking around what each one means and how they have a focus in both our classroom programmes and our playground.

Each letter of the work HEART relates to an individual value.

  H - Hauora / wellbeing

  E - Explore

  A - Aspire

  R - Respect

  T - Taonga / treasure

Collectively these 5 values are used to explain how we behave, learn, interact, play and treat one another.  All values are used as part of the class programme.

Parts of our curriculum can be seen through our values as well.  2024 is the year of Taonga - Appreciating What We Have.  Our curriculum focus will cover such learnings as knowing and understanding about the bird names our learningspace has, focus aspects from our gifted Cultural Narrative and appreciating what is around us.

Each class has 'kahu' cards.  These cards are used to acknowledge our values behaviours.  When a child is seen showing a value they are given one of these cards. The teacher will normally circle the value they are showing. Children write their name on the card and put it in the class box.  Fortnightly the cards are

          1. counted towards House points, and

          2. put in a Kahu Card draw at Assembly for a Duffy book or some other prize.

Kahu cards are also given out in the playground by teachers on duty.  We are always looking out for children who are showing the values.
