Eco Club Tie Dying! by Lucy Ferguson

Eco Club- Natural tie dying.

Kia ora, we are the WPS Eco Club. We are a club whose aim is to make things better for the environment by picking up rubbish at our school and reusing things. We have been learning about global warming and things that contribute to it. One of these things is Fast Fashion. The Fast Fashion industry has a negative impact on our environment as their clothes are often made with air polluting dyes and they use an excessive amount of water in the production process. These toxic chemicals often end up being released out to the areas surrounding the factories, damaging the local environment and threatening the health of the communities who live near these factories, as well as local wildlife and ecosystems.

Fast Fashion is also about businesses making clothes that keep up with new fashion trends. As trends are changing all the time, companies are producing cheaply made items more than ever. Sooner or later these trends become uncool and people will just throw that item of clothing to the landfill, which in the end adds to the warming of our planet.

We, the Eco Club, were talking about solutions for the problem created by Fast Fashion and decided to do some upcycling of an item of clothing we already had. All of the Eco Club members were keen on tie-dying and making sure the dye was sustainable and good for our environment. Miss Ferguson boiled down some food scraps from our school garden to make the dye and we dyed our shirts. The red dye came from beetroot, green was from spinach, purple from purple cabbage and yellow from turmeric.
