Reading, Writing and Mathematics at Wigram Primary School

You may have heard the latest push from the Government around schools having to teach 1 hour a day each of Reading, Writing and Mathematics.

The Government has made this sound like something new and exciting - well this is something we do anyway, and have done for years.

The English curriculum that covers our Reading and Writing focus areas, and also incorporates oral language, written language and visual language, critical thinking as well as learning to Read, and Write.  It also links to our Science, Social Sciences and every other part of the curriculum.

Our spelling and handwriting programmes fit within the English curriculum as well.

Mathematics is not just around computational skills, but the ability to use oral language to express, and understand, problemsolving in Maths, critical thinking and a lot of visualisation.

We are always striving to be better at what we do, and in 2024 we are continuing our expansion of the Structured Literacy approach within Reading across the school, and looking at how this links to our Writing programmes.
