Winter Sport Tournament

This week students in our hockey and football teams were given the opportunity to compete against other schools in our zone in a Winter Sport Tournament. Leading up to the tournament both teams practised their technical skills and teamwork at school and arrived on the day feeling prepared, excited and a little nervous. Both teams put on a wonderful display of cooperation and sportsmanship. It was the first time our hockey players had played on turf and they did really well to adapt to the speed of the ball compared to grass that they are used to. Our Wigram FC Football Team worked well together to win all of their games and in turn winning the whole tournament. This has earned them a spot in the Primary Sports Canterbury Winter Tournament next month where they will compete against schools from all over Christchurch. Below are recounts written by students from each team.

On Tuesday 22nd August the Wigram FC Football team competed at the seven a side Winter Sport Zones Tournament at Hagley Park. We played against St Patricks, Fendalton, Burnside and Ilam School. We managed to win every game, the best was 6-0 against Fendalton school. Our closest game was 2-0 over St Patricks, the games were 10 minutes long so five minutes per half and then we switched halves. The fields were a bit muddy so when you were running with the ball it sometimes got slowed down by the mud and we left the ball behind. We finished first in our zone with 20 points out of twenty and the runners up were Burnside with 10 points. This means that we now get to go to a Canterbury Winter sports tournament as winners of our zone! - By Isaac Young (Kererū).

On Tuesday the 22nd of August, Miss Hanrahan selected a team to compete in a Hockey Tournament. For this competition we weren’t playing on grass, instead we were playing on turf. Many other schools near us attended this tournament like St Patricks, Fendalton and Ilam School. When we arrived, there were a lot of schools that were also competing. A lot of the schools were very supportive and showed sportsmanship. We played 4 games, unfortunately we weren’t able to win any games but we got a tie/draw for one of the games. We were all still very proud of ourselves though because we showed support to the other team and were showing a lot of sportsmanship. For the tie we got +2 points for having a tie with the other team. I found this experience very interesting as it was our first time playing on turf. The hockey ball was moving much faster than it would on grass as grass is longer and it stops the ball after a while. Overall we all enjoyed this experience and are all proud of ourselves! - By Jolin Wu (Kererū).
