St John Hornby Youth Division.

My Name is Hannah-Mae and I am a leader at St John Hornby Youth Division. We operate out of South Hornby Primary School on a Tuesday night between the hours of 1830 (6:30pm) and 2000 (8:00pm) every week during term time.

Let's start with what St John Youth is. St John Youth is a subsection of the organisation which focuses on bettering the youth of today in life skills and morals, through different leadership roles, responsibilities and age appropriate content derived from the national curriculum across the 29 badge options, without feeling like school. The age range is between the ages of 6-18 years old, which is then separated into 4 groups within a division, to ensure children learn the correct content corresponding to their age. These groups are Penguins, Greens, Blues, and Golds.

Penguins: Penguins are our youngest age group ranging from 6-8 or 9 years old, and they work towards earning 9 badges in order to receive their Super Penguin, which is presented by Primo, who is the mascot for the penguins.

Greens: Greens are the next group. They are aged 8 or 9-10 Years old, and they work towards achieving 3 compulsory badges and 3 non compulsory badges at green level, as well as 15 hours of community service in order to achieve their Emerald Shield.

Blues: Blues are the third group. They are aged 11-12 years old, and they work towards achieving 3 compulsory badges and 3 non compulsory badges at blue level level, along with 25 hours of community service in order to achieve their Sapphire shield.

Golds: Gold cadets are the oldest, They are aged 13-18 years old, and they work towards earning 6 compulsory badges and 6 non compulsory badges at gold level, as well as 100 hours of community service in order to achieve their Grand Prior award.

There are many other opportunities within this program. Like various camps, competitions, volunteer hours, and the ability to make friends across the entire nation at national events. There is also the ability to complete your Duke Of Edinburgh, as well as partake and even complete the sovereigns award. Which is recognised by The Queen/King of England.

St John youth is rainbow tick approved, which means, no matter your gender identity, no matter your sexual orientation, you are welcome. St John is also accepting of any and all races, religions, ideologies, beliefs and values you and your family may have. There are 11 divisions within the Christchurch region scattered around, so no matter where you live, there will always be a division near. There is also room for any 18+ leaders to join a division, so Parents/Caregivers, you can also get involved. However it is a volunteer role.
