The Senior Hubs have learnt how powerful persuasive writing can be!

Last term, some students in Years 5 and 6 wrote letters to Mrs Walkinshaw about an identified need in the Library. As the Library was used as a learning space for Maths and Spelling, the students in the Maths group discussed the pros and cons of working there. A common theme was the discomfort at having to sit and work on the floor during those times. They then decided to write to persuade Mrs Walkinshaw to provide furniture for them (and others) to use in the Library. On Tuesday was the great reveal - the students were provided with tables and chairs to use! They experienced first-hand, the power of persuasion! Here are some examples of their writing:

Dear Mrs Walkinshaw,

Our Maths Class (Mrs Lee’s) have recently done a vote on who would feel like they would need a desk or a table and everybody put their hand up. For that reason we are writing you this letter.

We have to work on the ground and leaners. It is very uncomfortable writing on the ground which we normally have to do our work on. Also our chromebooks could easily get stood on, tripped on or even stamped on.

We have done some research and we will need to buy 25 chairs and each chair is worth $49 and to buy all of them it will be about $1,225. The chairs are 45cm tall and 51cm wide. It is made out of bamboo and plywood and only weighs 3kg. The chair is rated 5 stars out of five, suitable for inside use and stackable.

There is a photo of the stool below.

Even though It’s a bit pricey, it's really good quality and cool. Plus it measures perfectly with the table we came up with as well.

The table that we came up with was a Nouveau Wood Look Folding table (Black) And it looks like the picture below.

It will be $280 for 4 tables which is the exact amount we need so if you could please give us these resources to buy these items we would be very thankful and grateful.

Kind regards,

Emanuel, Noah, Zekheria and Isaac.

Dear Mrs Walkinshaw,

We are Jolin and Shreya from Mrs Lee’s Maths Group. We work in the library. We only use leaners and some people who aren’t able to use one of the 10 leaners have to work on the floor. Whenever we try to write into our books without leaners sometimes our backs get sore which will make our posture not as ‘good’. For this reason we should have tables and stools.

It is extremely important that we have tables and stools because without them we can guarantee that our handwriting will not be as readable or neat as it would be if we were to be sitting at tables. Our Maths group agrees that tables will help. If we don’t use tables we aren’t able to use our protractors properly so that we aren’t able to learn the CORRECT angles.

We also strongly believe that when the Chromebooks are on the floor it can lead to the chromebook breaking if someone were to step on it. Other people can also use our Maths groups’ tables or stools when doing Spelling.

So as you can clearly see we need these stools and chairs in the library, and we need your help getting this furniture. We have researched and checked lots of sites and prices to give you some of the most affordable prices, good quality, local furniture pieces and space savers. We know that this will be expensive, but lots of people learn, work and read in the library. Mrs Lee’s Maths group and Miss Ronald’s spellers need these tables and stools, so help us buy these great pieces of furniture. This will help us with our learning a lot and most importantly we will be able to use our protractors properly and make sure our chromebooks don’t snap.

We have included the prices of tables and stools we have found online that we think would be good.

Kind regards,

Jolin, Shreya, Jamilah and Flora
