Get Wild Off the Rails @ Sutton Salt Lake 🏅

Dunedin Railways and Middlemarch Promotions —

Wednesday 25 April, 9.30–6.30pm. All aboard the Taieri Gorge train on ANZAC day for a world class rail experience with the added attraction of a guided walk to Sutton Salt Lake.

This day trip has been a joint effort by Dunedin Railways and Middlemarch Promotions, supported by Otago Road Services, especially for the Wild Dunedin festival.

The Taieri Gorge train departs Dunedin Railway Station at 9.30am returning at 6.30pm. The event includes the regular Taieri Gorge train journey with a special guided walk around the famous Sutton Salt Lake. There will be time for lunch in Middlemarch.

You will be on the Morning Taieri Gorge Train up to Pukerangi arriving at approximately 11.30am and be  met by a school coach (courtesy of  Otago Road Services) that will take you on the approximately 20 minute trip up to Sutton Salt Lake.

The Guided Walk around the lake (or salt flat depending on how wet it has been) will take about an hour.

" People are amazed by the almost moon like landscape and  the interesting plant and animal life." Dawn Coburn, Middlemarch Promotions

After your walk you will be transported to Middlemarch where you will have about three hours to explore the small town, have a leisurely lunch at the pub or a cafe and explore the interesting museum.

At 4pm the coach will leave for your 20 minute trip back to Pukerangi to meet up with the afternoon train service and your spectacular trip down the gorge to Dunedin.

Remember to take a range of clothing for all weathers and good shoes for the walk.

For children  taking part in the walk to Sutton Salt Lake  they can earn a Kiwi Guardian Wild Dunedin Medal.  The guide on your walk will give out a leaflet with instructions on how to redeem a medal on www.wilddunedin.nz website.

Many thanks to the Middlemarch Promotions Group and Otago Road Services for providing the off-train experience free of charge as part of the Wild Dunedin Festival.
