New Leadership Roles
We see the start of each year as a great opportunity to foster leadership skills for a whole new group of children.
The Year 6 children were given the opportunity to apply for our Rangitahi (young leader) roles to hold positions of responsibility across the school and we are delighted to announce that the following children are our Rangitahi for 2022:
Jack N. and Charlee S. will focus on our Winchwise values; Ashlee and Sophie Mo. will organized the PALs (Physical Active Learning), our Sports Crew are Hugo and Quin; Digi Techs roles go to Emily and Tilly and our Eco team leaders are Zoe and Maurissa.
Through a selection process where children volunteered for the roles Mrs Woodley now has got a merry band of budding librarians. Over the coming weeks they will train up in the skills necessary to help run our school library.
Alongside our bus safety training two groups of bus monitors were chosen by the bus drivers and teachers. Annabelle, Sophie Mo, Jake and Elizabeth will support Mr Scott and the children on the Country bus and Chloe, Tilly, Riley and Ivy will help the Orari bus driver and children.
Lyn Leaving Our School
Lyn, one of our lovely bus drivers, is leaving our school in a couple of weeks. She has found a new position nearer to her home on the other side of Geraldine and so it makes sense for her to take up on it.
Lyn has been working alongside our children on the Orari bus for almost 2 years and we will miss the care and kindness she has shown.
We wish her all the best in her new position driving trucks and thank her for looking after our children.
We are now on the look out for a new bus driver!
Omicron Phase Two Learning Support Planning
Now that we have moved into Phase Two of the Red Framework and we know that there are cases of Omicron in South Canterbury we are starting to activate some more of our school planning to support our childrens' learning.
After surveying our parents to see which children would benefit from loan devices from school we have sent out devices for children in the senior part of the school to take home. These are on loan for the remainder of the term, by which time we hope that the peak of the Omicron wave will have passed.
Ako Nui teachers have prepared 3 weeks worth of learning that is set up and ready to launch when needed on the google classrooms platform. At present it is hidden and unavailable for the children to access but is ‘locked and ready to go’.
For the juniors hard packs of learning activities will be coming home this week. A lot of teacher time has gone into these to make sure they are relevant for each child and there will be 3 weeks worth of learning in them. However we ask that these are NOT opened and shared with your child. We will let you know if/when these packs will need to be used. Until then please pop them away somewhere safe. If isolation drags on longer than 3 weeks, your child will receive their learning activities through Seesaw. The juniors have Ipads set up and ready to go in case any of their individual children or classes need to go into self isolation. These are still needed in classes and will be given out if and when the situation arises.
Health Support
Our school, as with others across Canterbury, will be supported by both the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health if we receive information that any of our children or staff are infectious or need to be isolated because they are close or household contacts.
The main thing is to let Tre know as soon as possible if you or your whanau need to isolate due to either of these scenarios so that we can activate this support and let our school community know what steps they need to take.
Interesting times ahead, and we will deal with situations when and if they arise. Until then it’s sort of business as usual! At this stage we are delighted that the Year 1 and 2 trip to Skipton Animal Park and Pleasant Point Pool can still happen and we are keeping fingers crossed that the Year 3 and 4 Raincliff Camp will be going ahead too. We are planning as if it will!
Keep Safe and Healthy,
Tre
