INQUISITIVE MINDS, CONNECTED KIDS, KIND HEARTS
SCHOOL CLOSED MONDAY 6 JUNE - Queens Birthday.
Visiting Performers
It seems so long since we were able to invite some visiting performers into school and last week we had a double bonus with both the NZ Playhouse coming to perform ‘The Emperor's New Clothes’ on Monday and then on Thursday El Gregoe, the magician came to wow the children with his magic tricks, his beautiful collection of birds that are part of the act and also reinforce our school values with his messages about caring, respect, encouraging others and being resilient. There was a lot of laughter and audience participation for both acts.
Cross Country But Not as We Know It
With Covid still in our community this year the Temuka Schools group that we belong to decided not to hold an interschool cross country event. This gives us an opportunity to try something new. While we are aware we have some very keen and able long distance runners across the school, we also know that the words ‘cross country’ are something to dread for some children who are not built for this competitive and sometimes grueling event.
So this year we are holding two running events. The first happened on Tuesday and was a mini school cross country that only our capable and competent runners participated in. This enabled them to run laps around our school field and show us how resilient and fast they could be. At the same time we could establish our top cross country runners in each year level and select our team of Year 5 and 6 children who will go on to represent our school in the South Canterbury Cross Country next week.
Here are the placegetters across the school:
Here are some of the children who were placegetters:

All our children will participate in the second event on Friday 17 June which we are calling ‘The Amazing Race’. This event, while it can still have a competitive edge, will be more geared towards participation and enjoyment of running around a series of obstacles on a course set up in the Winchester Show Grounds. We are looking forward to staging this and parents are welcome to attend and join in if they wish.
PALs Workshop
On Friday 27 May Stella, Ashlee, Zoe M, Zoe S, Maurissa, Brax, and Phelise traveled into Timaru to the Southern Trust Event Centre to participate in a Physical Activities Leaders workshop. These children are developing skills as leaders and here they learnt skills for managing and organizing sport and PE activities for groups of children at playtimes, as well as participating in some activities to learn some games they could try out back at school.
The children planned goals for these activities and brainstormed what these might look like. I was very proud to be accompanying this group, who listened carefully, played fairly and worked together to plan successfully and with focus. They are looking forward to setting up these playtime sessions.
Public Holidays Coming Up
A reminder that we have two public holidays this term. Queen’s Birthday is coming up on 6 June which is next Monday and Matariki on Friday 24 June in week 8 of the term. Of course on both these days the school will be closed. We hope you all are able to enjoy some whanau time together on these days.
Nga mihi,
Tre
