Hells Reading Challenge

Emma Neylon —

The Te Maunga teams tasty new way to get the students reading!

The HELL Reading Challenge is a well-established programme, now in its fourth year, which has been hugely successful in getting kids reading and enjoying the pleasures of stories — with the bonus of free pizza rewards. This year, for the first year ever the Te Maunga team has jumped on board to take advantage of this awesome incentive to get kids reading.

The HELL Reading Challenge is free, and it is so easy! Children receive a stamp on their pizza wheel for each book they read, and once seven books have been read they can redeem their pizza wheel for a free 333 kids’ pizza at HELL.

HOW IT WORKS

The Te Maunga teachers will assign a pizza wheel to each child. This will be looked after at school. Once a child has finished reading a book (either at home or at school!) the child will need to present a book review to one of the Te Maunga teachers in order to get a stamp. Each stamp represents one piece of pizza. Once all 7 pieces of pizza are stamped the pizza wheel is signed off and becomes a voucher for a 333 Kids Pizza at Hells.

We are not giving specific examples of how the book reviews can be done. In a nutshell the students need to be able to prove to us they know and comprehend the book to a high level. They can make a video, email us, do a poster, write a review e.t.c.

A few quick points...

• There is no limit on the number of wheels a student can fill up between March and December, provided they are stamped and authenticated by a school teacher or librarian. Your child could take a whole year to earn one pizza OR could be getting a pizza a month!

• The child/student must redeem their free pizza in person and before the expiry date, which is Sunday December 3rd 2017. Each pizza wheel will feature detailed rules and regulations, as well as a serial number that will be traced back to your school/library. We do this to ensure a high standard of conduct. It’s our honour code!

• As each child is different, each child will have a different size book that needs to be read before they get it signed off. We would recommend getting the book checked by the childs reading teacher before starting a book that we may think is too easy for your childs reading level.

We need your help to make this work!

Please encourage your child to read lots and ask them what they are reading. By discussing with you what they are reading this helps build up their comprehension of what they are reading which in turn builds up their reading level.

Also, encourage your child to be honest about what they have read with us. This programme will only work if we can trust what they are telling us about what they have read.
