Kauri Syndicate's Visit to Aratiatia Marae

Kaitlyn Mehrtens —

Yesterday Kauri Syndicate (the middle school) had the incredible experience of visiting Aratiatia Marae (at Fairfield College). The day gave the students immersion into Māori culture, history, and traditions.

The Kauri students were amazing, showing all of our school values as well as taking in all of the new learning. One of the highlights from the day was participating in a pōwhiri (Māori welcoming ceremony), where our students were warmly embraced into the marae community.

Throughout the trip, our students delved into the rich history of the marae, engaging in enlightening discussions and experiences. They learned Māori games, the art of poi, ki-o-rahi, mā rakau and waiata. Each of the workshops was led by Fairfield College students who were wonderful leaders.

The whanaungatanga throughout the day was really special to see and experience. Thank you to Matua Tangi, all the Fairfield College staff who welcomed us, and all the parents who came along to help.

It was a day to remember by all! So many inspiring experiences that we will be connecting to in our classrooms in the remaining weeks of the term.
