Delivery of Health and Wellbeing Education at YMS Survey

Allan Robertson —

Thank you to the whānau who have already filled in this survey. In these times, the health and wellbeing of all students has never been more important. If you have not yet filled in the survey then please take the time to share your ideas. This is your chance to share what you would like your children to be taught to ensure they are healthy in mind, body and spirit; now and in the future.

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers,

The New Zealand Education Act requires all schools to consult the community every two years about the delivery of the Health Curriculum. It is important that gather our school community's thoughts as to how best teach health and wellbeing at all levels of the school.

Please see the Health and Wellbeing Survey to record your responses.

All young people equally deserve an education that enables them to develop healthy relationships, to become positive in their own identities, and to develop competencies for promoting and sustaining their own wellbeing and that of others.

The New Zealand Education Act requires all schools to consult the community every two years about the delivery of the Health Curriculum. Health Education is part of the Health and Physical Education learning area. Learning about health is guided by the requirement to teach the four key areas of Health and Physical Education which are mental health, sexuality education, food and nutrition, plus body care and physical safety.

Please note that sexuality education is is very different to sex education. The NZ Ministry of Education has recently released a guide on how to teach about Relationships and Sexuality Education.

The Ministry of Education's new guidelines on 'Relationships and Sexuality Education' identifies three Key Learning Areas:

  • Ko Au - All About Me
  • Ko Aku Hoha - Friendships and Relationships with Others
  • Ko Toku Ao - Me and The World

The YMS Health Curriculum is currently being redesigned to take into account these new guidelines from the Ministry of Education. The purpose of this survey is to gather your ideas as to what we should include and prioritise in the YMS Health Curriculum. Your input will be invaluable in designing a YMS programme that fits the needs of our school community.

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on our Health Education programme.

The process of consultation will be:

(a) Responses to be completed by Friday 29 October

(b) Data will be collated by the BOT and the community will be advised of the results.

(c) The wishes of our school community will be considered in the redesign of the YMS Health and Wellbeing Curriculum.

Kind regards,

Allan Robertson on behalf of the Yaldhurst Model School BOT
