Learning Support

Support for learners who have additional needs is a high priority at Yaldhurst Tōtara Tūkaha.

Our learning support programmes are overseen by a SENCo (Special Education Needs Coordinator) and a Learning Support Coordinator and include support for:

  • Literacy - Reading/Writing

  • Mathematics

  • English Language Learners

  • Neurodiverse Learners

  • Gifted & Talented Learners

  • Behaviour

  • High Health Needs

  • Social Skills (via Lego Therapy)

We use a multifaceted approach to meet the needs of learners with additional needs including:

  • In-class support from the teacher, in addition to normal classroom programmes

  • Support from a teaching assistant

    • In class

    • Small group

    • Individual

  • Additional resources for parents to use at home

  • Referrals to outside agencies for example:

    • Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour

    • Ministry of Education (e.g. Speech Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists)

    • Blind Low Vision New Zealand

We are also happy to support parents who seek advice from GPs, Pediatricians, and other specialists by completing forms and providing supporting information.
